Call for PhD project proposals in Autonomous Robotic Systems for Laboratory Experiments (YorRobots ALBERT CDT)

This is a call for academics from across the University to submit novel PhD project proposals in the area of Autonomous Robotic Systems for Laboratory Experiments (ALBERT) for assessment by the directors of the YorRobots ALBERT CDT (Centre for Doctoral Training).

Accepted proposals will be included in efforts to advertise ALBERT, the YorRobots CDT, to prospective students, who will be able to apply for a funded position in ALBERT.

This is an exciting opportunity to foster novel cross-disciplinary research in laboratory automation.

The ALBERT CDT focuses on the development of the science, engineering, and soci-technology underpinning robots for laboratory automation for Chemistry and related sciences.

  • The deadline for submitting PhD project proposals is Friday 3 November.
  • Applications for students will open on Friday 10 November, and there will be an online introductory session on Monday 20 November.
  • Prospective students will have until the Friday 5 January 2024 to submit an application.

How to apply

Requirements

Projects should have at least two supervisors from the University, involving at least two different Departments. Proposals need to explain the relationship between the project and the CDT, and should be appealing to candidates wishing to pursue an interdisciplinary research project work across different fields.

Supervisors of selected projects will present their project to prospective students at an online introductory session on Monday 20 November 2023, which will be recorded and made publicly available.

Student candidates will need to apply through the department of the lead supervisor. Student interviews will follow guidelines of the lead supervisor's Department, which will require one member of the ALBERT CDT committee to sit in. Further details will be made available in due course.

Criteria

  • The main criteria for approval will be the relevance to the CDT. The selection will aim to achieve a good balance of projects across different areas of interest.

Submission

  • Proposals should encompass a maximum of two A4 pages (Arial font size 11, with 2 cm margins) to be submitted directly by email to pedro.ribeiro@york.ac.uk by Friday 3 November 2023 at 5pm.
