Jan Gulliksen
Jan Gulliksen is a professor in Human Computer Interaction at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden. He also holds the position as Dean of the School of Computer Science and Communication at KTH. In 2012, Jan was selected “Sweden’s Digital Champion” by the Swedish Government, and he is also Chairman of the Swedish Government’s Digitalization Commission.
Jan is a well known researcher on usability, accessibility and user-centred design and particularly its integration in the software engineering process, with applications to RUP and to Agile development and has published several papers on the topic. Jan’s research is action oriented working in real practical settings, with the purpose of changing and improving the practice. Jan is also Sweden’s representative IN ISO-standardization on these issues.
Why Agile development and user-centred design does not mix and what to do about it?
Short abstract
Agile development methodologies, and particularly Scrum is receiving increasing attention in all parts of interactive software development. And for good reasons. However, many of the concepts from user-centred design also fits in the agile philosophy, but without actually supporting UCD or contributing to the development of usable systems by itself. This keynote address will present results from a large study with the purpose of understanding the conditions for working with usability and user experience in agile projects. I will present the main obstacles to working with usability in agile projects and also show some of the success stories. Finally I will discuss how UCD need to develop to meet the agile philosophy.
