To obtain the expertise to correctly perform minimally-invasivevascular interventions thorough training is required. Trainingusing simulation systems are increasingly becoming an acceptedmethodology. Recently, a minimally-invasive vascular interventionsimulation (MIVIS) system has been developed. At the heart ofthis system lies an optimization problem to be solved repeatedly. In this paper, we investigate the advantages and disadvantages ofusing an evolutionary algorithm (EA) to solve the optimizationproblem instead of a problem-specific first-order analyticalapproximation algorithm. The results show that the use of the EAas optimization algorithm is favorable. A substantial reductionin time can be obtained while the RMS error associated with thesimulation result differs only slightly. |
