Departmental UK/EU PhD Studentships (DTG)

The EPSRC Doctoral Training Grant (DTG) funds one or more departmental PhD studentships per annum.

These awards are for new PhD students from within the UK or EU (according to conditions set annually by EPSRC) and provide a fee waiver at the Home/EU rate for three years, and a stipend of £14,296 (2016-17 RCUK stipend rate) designed to cover living expenses.

Requirements for application

Please indicate in the "Financial Support" section of your application for graduate study that you wish to be considered for an EPSRC studentship.

To be considered for competitive funding, you should apply no later than 15 January 2016 year in which you wish to start.

Applicants must possess outstanding academic ability: 

  • normally, a Bachelors: Honours 1st or equivalent  OR Masters: Distinction or equivalent, though applicants with strong subsequent academic or industrial careers will be considered.
  • a native speaker, or educated in English, or IELTS at level 6.5 with no element below 6

Applicants should be able to demonstrate the motivation and skills needed to complete a PhD:

  • a proposal that evidences good academic writing and referencing styles
  • an appreciation of the nature of PhD student, of PhD-level academic supervision, and of independent and collaborative research
  • clear motivation for undertaking PhD study, in York, in the chosen area, with the chosen supervisor(s)
  • evidence that the candidate has, or can develop, the skills required for the proposed research exist or can be developed
