Air traffic simulation and automated hazard identification. Safety related issues related to avionics.
After postgraduate degrees in Linguistics and Computer Science, I worked as a programmer for several years in York. In 2002, I moved to the department to work as an RA as part of Rolls-Royce's UTC, investigating the development of safety-critical software for civil aviation jet engine controllers. I left that post in 2005 to start working full-time on a PhD in non-standard computation as part of Susan Stepney's group. The PhD was EPSRC case funded by Microsoft as part of their PhD European Scholorship program and completed in 2007.
I rejoined the Department as an RA working for the SEAS DTC under Tim Kelly and Rob Alexande, looking at the safety of unmanned autonomous vehicles (UAVs, UGVs).
My next project was working on a European funded WP-E programme for SESAR (Single European Sky ATM Research). We used RAMS Plus software to model air traffic and air traffic controller workloads in scenarios where a random case of cabin depressurisation occurs. Through the use of search heuristics we aimed to provide an automated process to uncover worse case scenarios that could not be discovered using manual safety analysis. The project finished April 2013.
After this I returned to work with Dr Julian Miller in Electronics on the NASCENT project, looking at using evolutionary search to discover ways to configure carbon nanotubes to perform computations. NASCENCE finished in Oct 2015.
I am currently Associate Lecturer on the CPD safety courses as part of HISE.
