Scholarship success

Posted on 29 June 2017

Three of our undergraduate students have been awarded prestigious Laidlaw scholarships.

George Gabriel, Will Gardner and Luke Jenkinson will each recieve financial support to carry out research, as well as access to leadership and development training worth over £3,000.

George said, "The Laidlaw scholarship provides a rare opportunity to pursue and develop my original ideas in computer science and beyond. I'm very grateful for the chance to explore the world of research and I look forward to working with my supervisor and the programme coordinators to see where the project leads."

Will was praised by his mentor, Leandro Indrusiak, who said "Will exceeded my expectations when solving open-ended design problems, and is always keen to explore research questions that are clearly beyond the scope of an undergraduate module. I encouraged him to apply for a Laidlaw scholarship, and I am glad the Laidlaw selection committee agreed with my assessment of his potential."

The three will undertake research projects over the summer:

  • George Gabriel
    Dynamical Music with Boolean Networks
    Supervisor: Professor Susan Stepney
  • Will Gardner
Improving Analysis of Transactional Memory Traffic in Multicore Processor Networked Interconnects
    Supervisor: Dr Leandro Indrusiak
  • Luke Jenkinson
Using Unsupervised Machine Learning Techniques to Detect and Track Parkinson’s Symptoms
    Supervisor: Dr Nick Pears
