Do you provide visual illustrations, pictures, and symbols to help explain difficult concepts? (TXT33)
Why is this important?
It is said that "a picture paints a thousand words". Indeed, where possible, a well thought out illustration can be very helpful in aiding people's understanding of difficult ideas and concepts. This is particularly important for people with learning difficulties who may struggle with written text.
How to fix the problem
There are various visual illustrations, pictures, and symbols that can be used to help explain difficult concepts. Certain representations are more appropriate for particular ideas and concepts. For example:
- Complex data, especially numerical data, may be conveyed more easily using a graph and chart.
- Processes and workflows may be conveyed more easily using diagrams and flowcharts or videos and animations.
- For understanding how ideas, images or words are related to each other, concept maps (also known as mind maps) may be useful. In a concept map, each word or phrase connects to another word or phrase, and these link back to the original idea, word, or phrase.
- To provide an additional understanding of natural or historical events and objects, photographs, drawings, and videos may be useful.
