WebAIR

(if no) Do you provide a text summary at the top of the page or a link to a simpler version of the page? (TXT25)

Why is this important?

If the content of the webpage is too complex, it is helpful to provide a text summary that can be understood by everyone (in addition to the original content). This is particularly important for people with specific learning difficulties who may struggle to read the webpage. The summary should use short sentences and everyday words to capture the most important ideas and information in the content. Alternatively, if the content cannot be easily summarised, provide a link to an alternative version of the webpage that is simpler and easier to understand.

How to fix the problem

The W3C provides a list of tips for creating a summary of complex content:

  1. Identify the most important ideas and information in the content.
  2. Write one or more paragraphs that use shorter sentences and more common words to express the same ideas and information. (The number of paragraphs depends on the length of the original.)
  3. Measure the readability of the summary.
  4. Edit the summary. Consider dividing longer sentences into two or replacing long or unfamiliar words with shorter, more common terms.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 as needed.
