Information for new students coming to York


This information is primarily for new students who have been selected to study in York. But some of the information may be useful for potential new applicants wishing to study in York.


What will you be doing once you get here?

Masters in CS (6 months): You will be expected to register for a full 2 terms.  You can navigate our departmental web site at www.cs.york.ac.uk to find out the modules we offer on our masters programmes.

Masters in CS (full time 12 months): You will follow the requirements of the chosen full time MSc programme. You can navigate our departmental web site at www.cs.york.ac.uk to find out the modules we offer on our masters programmes.

Masters in Electronics: Ditto. A similar schedule as for CS students is expected. More details to follow. Please visit the Electronics dept website to see what modules are on offer.

Phd/PostDoc/Faculty/Research Masters: You have been designated a supervisor/collaborator. Please discuss the research work you plan to undertake  in York. Please try to agree to concrete outcomes before you arrive here. From Eureca project point of view, we would like technical reports and publications as concrete outcomes of your visit here. And we will need these as proof to provide feedback to the EU Erasmus Mundus programme.


How do I apply for accommodation?

Details of accommodation available can be found by visiting our university accommodation web pages.  To contact the accommodation office please email accommodation@york.ac.uk and CC to suresh at cs dot york dot ac dot uk. In the Subject field write "Eureca : Erasmus Mundus (Accommodation Request)".

Please remember that you will receive a monthly stipend from the project. You will need to use your stipend money to pay for accommodation.

How cold will it be in January? What clothing should I bring?

In brief, yes, it will be cold and the cold spell can last till March and usually does. The temperature during Jan-March will vary between -3 Celsius (at night) to 10 Celsius (during day). You will need to bring at least the following items:
  1. - water resistant trainers, shoes or boots with a strong grip for regular use
  2. - warm scarves to wear around your neck
  3. - pair of gloves
  4. - water resistant jacket or long coat
  5. - wolley cap or something similar to keep your head warm
  6. - thermal vest/long john/underwear
  7. - jumper or sweater
  8. - long sleeved t-shirts
  9. - thermal socks

Travel Insurance

You need to take good quality travel insurance from a reputed company to cover against any illness, emergency situations, problems with your flight etc. during your travel. When you purchase your Air ticket you should also take travel insurance. Your insurance should also cover the return part of your trip.

Please purchase return air tickets and with an open return date.


Health Insurance

For students (Undergraduates, Masters and PhD) students coming to York for at least 6 months, the university health service will provide free health care under the National Health Service scheme.

For PostDocs and Faculty who are here for less than 6 months, you need to get medical insurance cover. Please purchase this along with your travel insurance.
