Arrival Information
This page provides a checklist of things that need to be done once
you have received your visa to travel to the UK and you know your
arrival date. Please print this page and ensure that you check all the
relevant items in this list and keep this page with you when you travel
to the UK.
1. Inform your coordinator Suresh Manandhar regarding your arrival dates.
2. Complete the electronic registration procedure. Follow the
instructions given at:
http://www.york.ac.uk/newstudent
Once you complete your electronic
registration, you should receive your student number. For legal
reasons, please do not ask others (or your coordinator) to complete
this process.
a. Make a printout of the registration page
and keep it
safe.
b. You may want to show this to the
immigration officer on entry to th UK.
c. You will need the student number to
enroll in our modules.
3. There is lot of information at the newstudent website (http://www.york.ac.uk/newstudent).
Please spend some time going through this.
4. Before you board the flight to the UK, make sure that you have
the letter from the accomodation
office that clearly states your room number. York University is
divided into colleges. The letter will tell you the college your room
belongs to.
a. Once you arrive here, please go straight to the college porters
lodge to collect your room key.
b. You can take No 4. bus from York train station ( - this is
a long high tech looking purple bus that looks like a train). The
bus takes you direct to the University.
5. Arrangement for collection of your stipend has been made. You
should receive an email telling you the method for collecting your
stipend. Please take your passport and your student registration papers
with you to collect your stipend. You will be able to collect your
stipend in a monthly basis.
You will need to pay your room rent from your stipend.
6. The easiest route to reach York from Asia is via Manchester
Airport. There is a direct train from Manchester Airport to York. The
train takes roughly 2 hrs and 30 minutes.
If you are coming from Heathrow/Gatwick London then the simplest
(but not the quickest) method
is to take
the National Express bus from the airport directly to York. I would
strongly recommend this. You do not need to purchase the bus ticket in
advance. You can pay in the bus. The journey takes about 7-8 hours. You
may need to change in London Victoria and/or Leeds but at least you
will not need to carry your luggage through the London underground
system. The
bus will drop you at the York train station. Bus timetable is available
from the National Express
website (http://www.nationalexpress.co.uk).
If you are unable to take the bus then you will need to take the
London underground to London Kings Cross station and and then take a
train York. You should able to purchase the ticket for York from London
Heathrow/Gatwick which may be cheaper. Please ask for the cheapest
single ticket to York and
ask the sales agent to print the departure times from Kings Cross.
