Professor Paul Cairns

Head of Department

Our excellence in both teaching and research means we are consistently ranked as one of the best computer science departments in the UK, and our strong research links with industry should help us respond to the challenges of leaving the EU.

We teach across the range of undergraduate, postgraduate and professional development and training. Our strong links with industry ensure that what we teach is up to date with current trends in such a dynamic industry – and means that our graduates are very much in demand in the modern workplace.

Our excellent employability record speaks for itself: over 95 per cent of our students gain graduate employment or go on to further study within six months of leaving York. In addition, a recent study has shown that our Computer Science graduates can expect to earn nearly £40,000 per annum after the first five years of their career.

Our research often translates into real world solutions for both industry and governments. Examples of organisations we have worked with include BAE Systems, IBM, NASA, the NHS, Thales and the Ordnance Survey, to name a few.  We have also fostered the establishment of many spin-off companies, and expect to continue this as an effective means of technology transfer.

We are proud to be located in purpose-built accommodation on Campus East. Our fantastic new facilities are an expression of the University’s belief in fostering the highest standards of academic excellence, delivering a world-class student experience, and providing a stimulating environment to support interactions with researchers and business.

We work hard to provide a thriving academic community for all our staff and students. As the Head of Department, it is my pleasure to welcome you to Computer Science at York. I hope that you will find a way to become involved – whether as a student, researcher, academic or industrial collaborator.
