We generally allow transfers between courses whenever possible, depending on whether the structure and contents of the course you are following permit us to do so.
Please refer to the following abbreviations used below:
Transfer is possible at any time during your first year, but only between courses that have the same first year contents.
The groups of courses that have a common first year are as follows:
Even so, it is sometimes possible to transfer between any two courses, up until the end of the first term.
The feasibility of transfer between courses in the second year would depend on the options you had chosen, in order to meet the requirements of each programme.
For example CSSE students can transfer to a CSci programme at any time in the second year, but transfer from CSci to CSSE would require you to have chosen the second-year hardware option in CSci.
The placement, if you chose to take it, would occur between the second and third years of your taught course.
Transfer from a variant without a placement to one with: you could register for a placement at any time up to the end of the month of July in the long vacation following your first year.
Transfer from a variant with a placement to one without: you could withdraw from registration for a placement at any time up to the end of the month of April in your second year.
In either case, there would be some scope for a later change of mind if there were special individual circumstances.
UK applicants should note that transfer from any 3-year course to any 4-year course, or from any 3-year or 4-year course to any 5-year course, after the end of the first year, could mean that any additional years of funding (loans, or help towards fees) would then be at the discretion of your Local Education Authority.
The 3, 4 or 5 years referred to here are the total duration of your course between entry and graduation, and not just the number of taught years. So, it is always safest to apply for the longest available course in the first instance: you could then transfer later to a shorter course, if you wished, without any problems.
