Foundation & Access Qualifications Guide

As a general rule, our requirements for Foundation and Access qualifications are
  1. a high grade in Mathematics,
  2. a good grade in Physics, Electronics or Electrical Science or Engineering,
  3. a suitable grade in a third subject and/or as an overall score, as appropriate, and
  4. a suitable qualification in English Language.

We offer accredited engineering programmes, and also scientific programmes in combination with Mathematics, all as shown above. For more information see our approach to computer science and engineering.

We do not not offer programmes in Information Technology, except to the extent that IT occurs as part of Computer Science and Engineering - and especially as part of Computer Science with Enterprise Systems. The Department does not offer programmes in Business Studies explicitly; but, as an engineering department, our teaching does include business awareness - especially, again, in the case of Computer Science with Enterprise Systems.

For all our programmes: we require Mathematics at a high level. Our offer will refer to Mathematics.

We do not require Computing or IT. They do not count as mathematical or physical subjects within our requirements.

Please note that these requirements are our usually necessary conditions for admission. They are not automatically sufficient conditions: that is, their acquisition does not, on its own, guarantee admission to the University or to any particular programme. We might think it appropriate to make other requirements in your particular case. Conversely, we might think it appropriate to waive some aspect of our requirements in your particular case: bear in mind that we are generally looking for reasons to admit you, and not for reasons to turn you away.

We make positive efforts to gather information about Foundation and Access programmes, concerning the method of reporting grades in individual subjects of interest to us, and the meanings of those grades. The list below comprises of those programmes, about which we have been able to obtain this information so far.

Please remember to give us full information about your Foundation or Access programme when you apply. If it corresponds to one of those listed below, then we shall be able to give full consideration to your application.

On the other hand, if it is one that is new to us, or about which we have been unable so far to obtain details, we will make fresh enquiries. The form of those enquiries is shown at the foot of this page. Unfortunately, in some cases we are unable to obtain a reply, or we receive a reply that does not answer our questions. In such cases we must, regretfully, reject your application. So, do please encourage your institution, if it is not listed below, to make available to us the information that we need.

Letter of Enquiry

We are always trying to bring up to date our information on Access and Foundation programmes, so that we can treat applicants from them fairly by comparison with those offering A-levels. We are aiming to obtain the following information about any programme from which we have received an applicant. The list of points about which we are seeking information is shown here in full, in the interests of openness.

  1. Does your programme involve a choice from a few 'pathways', such as ENGINEERING, or SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY, for which a student must register before getting down to the details of subjects and modules?

    If so, what are they?

  2. Is the group of subjects taken by a student (following an ENGINEERING or SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY pathway, if that applies)

    (i) a menu of options or modules from which the student can choose, or

(ii) a fixed small number of subjects?

If (i), do you place any restrictions on what a student can or must take?

If (ii), what are those subjects? Are they of equal standing in the package?

  3. Is the quantity of material taught in Mathematics

    (a) at least equivalent to an A-level, or

    (b) about three quarters of an A-level, or

    (c) about two thirds of an A-level, or

    (d) less than that?

If your programme is modular, how many modules in Mathematics have to be taken to attain this quantity?

  4. Is the quantity of material taught in Physics or Electronics

    (a) at least equivalent to an A-level, or

    (b) about three quarters of an A-level, or

    (c) about two thirds of an A-level, or

    (d) less than that?

If your programme is modular, how many modules in Physics or Electronics have to be taken to attain this quantity?

  5. Do you report separately on the grade in each subject (or module)?

  6. Is your grading system

    (a) A, B, etc. closely related to A-level grades, or

    (b) A, B, etc., not related to A-level grades, or

    (c) Distinction, Merit, Pass, or

    (d) percentage, or

    (e) other.

  7. What are your grades that correspond in level of achievement (if not quantity of material) to grade A, and to grade B, at A-level?

  8. Is there a particular grade in a particular module or unit that corresponds to an IELTS score of 6.5, with scores of at least 6.0 in each of the categories of reading, writing, speaking and listening?
