Computer Science with Business Enterprise Systems

What is an Enterprise System?

Enterprise Systems are usually regarded as large and complex information systems that cross a variety of boundaries, within the organisation and also, often, across the world. They can be thought of as single platforms that support a range of different activities across an entire organisation. In short, they are enterprise-wide systems, designed to solve enterprise-wide problems.

The scope of Enterprise Systems is growing all the time. Beyond traditional areas of international / multinational business, they can now be found also in smaller business organisations, e-government, heath care and even in non-profit and non-governmental organisations.

See here for more on enterprise architecture and its management.

What would your programme with Business Enterprise Systems consist of?

The new programmes focus on the problems of very large-scale, distributed, and highly complex software systems. The aim is to build on the Department's existing close relationship with industry to offer a degree programme that deals with the principles and practices of constructing and managing Enterprise Systems.

Close collaboration with industry lies at the heart of the programme. Participation in this programme will bring you into direct contact with members of top business organisations, and give you first-hand experience of dealing with the problems of Enterprise Systems. During your studies, you will, of course, acquire specific engineering and management skills; but, additionally, through close collaboration with industry, we expect you to develop the essential people skills that will help you progress quickly through the first few years of work and on to the fast track in your chosen career.

What can you expect to get out of these programmes?

Distinctive Content

Currently, we have entered into agreements with Amadeus, Detica, Glaxo Smith Kline, IBM and VocaLink, to provide direct input at various stages in the programme. In addition, each of these organisations has indicated a wish to take students on placement, which will allow you to gain first-hand experience of working with their extremely large information systems.

Distinctive Delivery

A specialist year-long seminar module will, in conjunction with input from our industrial partners, be used to make links between the engineering and the management parts of the programme content. Team and individual projects will provide hands-on experience and, in the later parts of the programme, our industrial partners will provide direct input through specialist seminars and master classes.

A Distinct Advantage

On completing this programme, you will:

  • understand the engineering and management challenges of Enterprise Systems and have an appreciation of the techniques needed to overcome those challenges,
  • understand the fundamentals of how to design and build quality large-scale systems, including architectural styles, design patterns, service-oriented architectures, model-driven development and the theory and practice of distributed systems, and
  • understand the underlying management and organisational theory needed to ensure the delivery and maintenance of high-quality enterprise systems, including change management, organisational patterns, project management, complexity management and workflow modelling.

Most importantly, you will be equipped with the skills to become a more productive and effective member of an organisation when you join it, and to have improved career prospects while you remain within it - providing value to employee and employer alike.
