This page contains the details of the allocation process prior to opening the allocation database to students. The remaining part of the process is described jointly for staff and students in two separate timetables: one for taught MSc students and one for undergraduate students.

Setter-defined projects

Mid-December:

Spr/3/Wed: Deadline for supervisors to make their projects available to vetters. This is done by going to the project allocation system and clicking on the 'Add a project' link which is at the bottom of most pages. This link takes you to a form which allows you to create a project. Supervisors have two ways of providing a description of the project. They can just paste it into the form (using a variety of formats) or they can supply a URL which points to the description. A default value for such a URL is provided, but (unlike the previous system) any URL is OK.

Once a supervisor has entered all their projects, they should contact their allocated vetter by email and let them know the projects are ready for vetting. In fact, any project can be vetted as soon as it is in the database. Note that if a project is subsequently edited, then by default it becomes unvetted. Supervisors receive vetting feedback directly; requests for alteration or elaboration must be completed promptly, and notified to the vetter. Vetting may require more than one iteration. In case a budget, non-standard hardware, software or other specific resources are needed, the Laboratory Manager's approval should also be sought.

Vetters record their approval of a project via the project allocation system. There is no need to inform the Project Co-ordinator that they have done so.

See below for the regulations for student-defined projects submitted after the Spr/3/Wed deadline.

Spr/6/Fri: Deadline for vetters to complete the vetting process.

Student-defined (aka self-defined) projects

If a member of teaching staff agrees to supervise a project suggested by a student, and the definition is not ready by Spr/3/Wed, then the project is referred to as a student-defined project. The process for such projects is described in the timetables previously mentioned: one for taught MSc students and one for undergraduate students.
