Projects should be set at the appropriate level - either Honours (H) or Masters (M). New definitions of Honours (H) and Masters (M) level study are expected in a forthcoming UK Quality Code for Higher Education. The QAA is "currently working closely with the UK higher education sector to develop the Quality Code. It will replace the set of national reference points known as the Academic Infrastructure from the 2012-13 academic year." It follows that taught MSc projects taking place in Summer 2012 should be M level as that is defined by the Academic Infrastructure. The following summarises what the existing (but soon to be replaced) 'Academic Infrastructure' states about the H and M levels:
| Level | Key Characteristics |
|---|---|
| H | informed by forefront of knowledge; systematic understanding of key aspects of their field of study; use of established techniques; conceptual understanding applied to research, argumentation and solutions; ability to manage own learning, scholarly reviews of research |
| M | critical awareness of problems at the forefront of
academic or professional knowledge and practice; comprehensive understanding of issues in own research or advanced scholarship; understanding of established techniques; originality in the application of knowledge, and formulation of new "hypotheses"; critical evaluation of research, methods etc. |
