Tailored Courses For Industry

In conjunction with the research group we provide a range of courses on Safety Engineering, with an emphasis on Embedded Systems and Software.

The content and structure of the material can be tailored to suit the needs of specific clients for a range of on-site courses.

We can also draw on the expertise of staff from other related research groups at York for subjects such as human factors in safety critical systems.

The first course was developed for, and presented to, the SVRC at the University of Brisbane, Australia, in 1995. Since then, more than 100 further courses have been presented, in variants ranging from 2 to 10 days in duration. Past clients for on-site courses have included major defence and transport sector companies, military and public bodies, academic departments and independent safety assessment organisations. There have also been a number of special short courses and tutorials based on the course material.

Courses can be tailored to suit audiences ranging from systems or software engineers requiring an initial introduction to safety issues, up to experienced safety engineers who want to investigate the latest approaches to analysing safety properties of complex computer systems and software.

The courses are very "hands-on", with a high proportion of case study and exercise sessions. Most of these sessions are in small groups led by one of the course presenters, providing a high ratio of lecturers / demonstrators to attendees. PowerPoint based presentations and videos will also be used.

These courses are closely linked with the Department's postgraduate taught MSc and Certificate courses in Safety Critical Systems Engineering and Tailored courses which cover a suitable range and depth of material may be counted as equivalent to MSc or Certificate course modules, giving exemption from those modules for attendees who subsequently register for the full MSc or Certificate (satisfactory completion of an assessment, and payment of an examination fee will be required).
