TIMES HIGHER EDUCATION AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED

25 November 2011

The seventh annual Times Higher Education Awards saw the University of Sheffield pick up the coveted top accolade of University of the Year, for “its determination and grit to make a lasting contribution to the future of the city”.

Sheffield’s victory was witnessed by more than 1,000 people, who gathered at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane for the awards last night, held in association with Santander Universities and supported by the Higher Education Academy.

Other winners at the glittering black-tie event, which was hosted by Rob Brydon, included the University of Leicester for its wristwatch device that could revolutionise the way we measure and monitor blood pressure for the first time in more than a century, earning it the award for Outstanding Contribution to Innovation and Technology.

Universities from all over the country gathered to celebrate the greatest ideas, the finest practice and the very best researchers and teachers in the sector. David Willetts, the universities and science minister, gave a short introductory speech at the event.
