Studying with ACAGThe Advanced Computer Architectures Group has gained international recognition, with the recent THES Outstanding Engineering Team of the Year 2011 award confirming the group as a top quality environment for research activity. ACAG covers many areas of research, including neural computation, advanced data processing and grid computing, image processing technology, FPGA architectures and Novel CPU systems and software methodologies. ACAG has a strong presence of both blue-sky and applied and commercial research activity, and resides in a 6* Computer Science Department. The university itself is a highly ranked institute which also won the 2010 THES University of the Year award. Modes of StudyMost research students in our group choose to undertake a PhD by research. This is typically a three-year research project leading to an award of a Doctorate in the chosen subject. However students can in theory apply for MPhil, MSc by Research or an EngD. Part time study is also possible. The key points are summarised below:
Funding Your StudyACAG has limited funds available, often a PhD or other position will be funded by a grant award, which is highly dependant upon external factors. You should check our web-site regularly if you wish to know what is currently available. However additional funding routes are possible:-
Applicants with their own funding, or a sponsor company or education grant, can apply at any time, and we are very happy to consider your applications. Obtaining funding from the university's internal schemes (department, university and Overseas awards) requires applications to be received in time for a competitive process (usually early spring), and applicants would typically be expected to have a 2:1 or 1st to have a chance of success. How To ApplyYou should contact us in the first instance (contact chrisb @ cs.york.ac.uk) to introduce yourself and highlight your interest in applying. We will then put you in touch with a suitable supervisor, and advise you how to start a formal application.
