Why the University | Why the City of York | Why the Department of Computer Science
The University of York is an inspiring place to study - a top-class university, in pleasant surroundings, in a beautiful city.
York is in the premier league, or Top Ten according to most of the university teaching league tables published annually in quality British newspapers.
York has a very high score for teaching, in most of these tables.
From the University's main site at Heslington, you can walk to the City walls in about ten or fifteen minutes, and then on into the City centre in about another ten minutes. Of course, there are buses if you don't like walking.
That was travelling North-West. See here for maps and directions.
If you went North-East instead, you would come to 'Heslington East', where there is due to be a large expansion of the University with another lake and new departments and colleges.
The Department of Computer Science will be moving to impressive new buildings here, in 2010.
Or, just a hundred metres to the South-East, there is the old village of Heslington: which contains banks, a post office, some small shops, and two pubs that are very popular with students.
Finally, if you were to walk South-West from the Heslington site, you would, after about fifteen minutes, come to the old village of Fulford and, after five more minutes, arrive at the East bank of the River Ouse. From there you can either cross the river by the Millennium Bridge or walk along the river bank on the 'New Walk', a tree-shaded path established in 1744, until you reach the very centre of the City.
The University also occupies a mediaeval building in the City centre: the King's Manor.

Where is York? | How big? | How old? | What like? The Department of Computer Science is rated Excellent for its teaching. The ratings are given by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE).
The Department's research work has been awarded the top grade, 5*, for two Research Assessment Exercises in succession.
We take entrants who are very well qualified in Mathematics and Physical Science, and we expect a lot from them. We teach intensively - in terms of pace, rather than contact hours; we assume that you will be motivated to do a lot of work on your own and in groups. We examine rigorously.
Our teaching is designed to encourage you to consider general principles that will be of long-term value to you, rather than to feed you with facts that will become history by the time you have graduated.
Our examinations emphasise problem-solving rather than the recall of data.
Students find our programmes testing and satisfying.
Employers find our graduates highly rewardable.
We lay great emphasis on individual and small-group tuition. Given the demands of our programmes, we think it only right that we should give our students every possible form of support.
Our MEng and BEng programmes carry the highest possible level of professional engineering accreditation.
The proportion of our graduates entering graduate-level employment or further training is 96%. That is the highest proportion of any Computer Science Department in the U.K.
