Transfer between programmes within Computer Science

Our web pages use the following abbreviations, whenever that makes things clearer:

CSSE   Computer Systems and Software Engineering
CSAI   Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence
CEnt   Computer Science with Business Enterprise Systems
CEmb   Computer Science with Embedded Systems
  CSci   Computer Science
  MaCS   Mathematics and Computer Science
  CSMa   Computer Science and Mathematics

General flexibility

The main point here is that we try to allow transfers whenever possible: that is, when the structure and contents of the programme you are following permit us to do so.

In your first year

Transfer is possible at any time during your first year, but only between programmes that have the same first year contents.

The groups of programmes that have a common first year are as follows.

  1. CSSE, CSAI, CEmb, CSci (with or without placement, in each case)
  2. CEnt (with or without placement)
  3. CSMa, MaCS (with or without placement, in either case)

Even so, it is sometimes possible to transfer between any two programmes, up until the end of the first term.

In your second year

The feasibility of transfer between programmes in the second year would depend on the options you had chosen, in order to meet the requirements of each programme.

For example CSSE students can transfer to a CSci programme at any time in the second year, but transfer from CSci to CSSE would require you to have chosen the second-year hardware option in CSci.

Year's placement in industry

This placement, if you chose to take it, would occur between the second and third years of your taught programme.

Transfer from a variant without a placement to one with: you could register for a placement at any time up to the end of the month of July in the long vacation following your first year.

Transfer from a variant with a placement to one without: you could withdraw from registration for a placement at any time up to the end of the month of April in your second year.

In either case, there would be some scope for a later change of mind if there were special individual circumstances.

Duration of any funding

UK applicants should note that transfer from any 3-year programme to any 4-year programme, or from any 3-year or 4-year programme to any 5-year programme, after the end of the first year, could mean that any additional years of funding (loans, or help towards fees) would then be at the discretion of your Local Education Authority.

The 3, 4 or 5 years referred to here are the total duration of your programme between entry and graduation, and not just the number of taught years. So, it is always safest to apply for the longest available programme in the first instance: you could then transfer later to a shorter programme, if you wished, without any problems.
