Our undergraduate admissions requirements
for overseas qualifications

As a general rule, our requirements are

a high grade in Mathematics,
a high grade in a second subject, and/or as an average or overall score, as appropriate,
a basic qualification in physical science,
a suitable qualification in English Language.

We offer accredited engineering programmes, and also scientific programmes in combination with Mathematics, all as shown above. See our page on the York approach to this subject area.

We do not not offer programmes in Information Technology, except to the extent that IT occurs as part of Computer Science and Engineering - and especially as part of Computer Science with Enterprise Systems. The Department does not offer programmes in Business Studies explicitly; but, as an engineering department, our teaching does include business awareness - especially, again, in the case of Computer Science with Enterprise Systems.

For all our programmes: we require Mathematics at a high level. Our offer will refer to Mathematics.

You must have at least some basic qualification in Physics. This could be at a level one or two years earlier than your school-leaving qualification; but a qualification as part of your school-leaving qualification would provide an even more useful preparation.

We do not require Computing or IT. They do not count as mathematical or physical subjects within our requirements.

Please note that these requirements are our usually necessary conditions for admission. They are not automatically sufficient conditions: that is, their acquisition does not, on its own, guarantee admission to the University or to any particular programme. We might think it appropriate to make other requirements in your particular case. Conversely, we might think it appropriate to waive some aspect of our requirements in your particular case: bear in mind that we are generally looking for reasons to admit you, and not for reasons to turn you away.

Overseas qualifications from specific countries

Algerian qualifications

Applicants offering the Algerian Baccalaureate must obtain at least the following grades in the SCIENCE (S) series.

Mathematics: 16/20 points.
Another subject: 16/20 points.
Overall assessment: 14/20 points.

Argentine qualifications

Australian qualifications

Applicants offering Australian qualifications normally obtain a grade in one of the following indices for university admission.

Overall Position (OP) in Queensland.
University Admissions Index (UAI) in New South Wales and in Australian Capital Territory.
Equivalent National Tertiary Entrance Rank (ENTER) in Victoria.
Tertiary Entrance Rank (TER) in other states and territories.

Queensland OPs are reported as one of 25 bands, in which Band 1 is the highest. Each of the other indices mentioned above is expressed as a percentage on a nationally agreed common scale.

Applicants offering Australian qualifications must obtain at least the following grades.

Queensland: Band 9
Other states and territories: 85%

Austrian qualifications

Applicants offering the Austrian Reifeprüfungzeugnis/Maturazeugnis must obtain at least the following grades.

Mathematics EXAMINED IN WRITING: sehr gut.
Overall assessment: gut.

A qualification in English language (e.g. IELTS) is required from applicants whose first language is not English and who were not taught predominantly in English. Alternatively, this requirement can be satisfied by obtaining grade gut in English as one of the subjects in the Austrian Reifeprüfungzeugnis/Maturazeugnis.

Azerbaijani qualifications

In the Azerbaijani Attestation, the grading system is as follows.

5	excellent
4	good
3	satisfactory

But the Attestation on its own does not meet our requirements.

We would require you to have gained a further qualification such as the International Baccalaureate.

As a guide, we advise that the following Attestation grades represent the standard that we would expect at that stage of your education. Notice the inclusion of two mathematical subjects (for example, Algebra and Analysis and Geometry).

Two subjects in Mathematics: both grade 5 (excellent)
Overall assessment: grade 4.3

Applicants from Belgium often offer the European Baccalaureate or the International Baccalaureate.

French-speaking applicants sometimes offer the French Baccalaureate.

For Flemish-speaking applicants, our requirements in the Diploma van Hoger Secundair Onderwijs are as follows.

Mathematics EXAMINED IN WRITING : 85%.
Overall assessment: 80%.

In the Bulgarian Diploma za Sredno Obrazovanie, the grading system is as follows.

Applicants must obtain at least the following grades.

Mathematics: grade 5.5 / 6.
Overall assessment: grade 5.25 / 6.

Canadian qualifications

Applicants from Canada will have gained qualifications that vary somewhat from province to province. The following statement of our requirements is an attempt to be correct and brief at the same time. We shall be happy to be told of any errors or misunderstandings.

We require qualifications to have been obtained in five or six subjects, at Grade 12. In your application, you must include full details of the qualification you are offering.

Applicants must obtain at least the following grades.

Mathematics: 85%.
Overall assessment: 80%.

We do expect your application to reflect differences between provinces, and will take account of such differences according to such information as we have been able to obtain. For example, in Ontario we expect courses to be 4U (or U4); and in Quebec we expect the DEC. If you think that the requirements stated here must be modified in your case, owing to the province within which you were educated or for any other reason, please give full details in your application. Your case will be considered carefully and individually.

We particularly welcome applications in which two or more of your five (or six) Grade 12 papers are in Mathematics.

Chilean qualifications

Chinese qualifications

We have many applicants from China. Most of them have spent a year at an educational institution in Britain undertaking a Foundation Programme which prepares them either for British A-levels, or a qualification of its own which is similar to A-levels.

Cypriot qualifications

The following routes are available to applicants from Cyprus.

Applicants from Cyprus can offer A-levels of UK examining boards, set as overseas examinations. Our requirements are then as given above for A levels.
Applicants from Cyprus can offer qualifications from Foundation Programmes.
Applicants from Cyprus who have followed the educational system of Greece can offer the Apolytirion Enaiou Lykeiou, together with A-level Mathematics. That is,
- Mathematics exactly as in our requirements for A levels, and
- 18 points in the Apolytirion Enaiou Lykeiou, in the official national end-of-year examinations.
Applicants from Cyprus who have followed the educational system of Turkey will be considered once we have been able to obtain some information about that system.

Czech Republic qualifications

In the Czech Maturitni Zkouška / Maturita, each of the four subjects taken is graded as follows.

Estonian qualifications

The Estonian school-leaving examinations consist of the Gümnaasiumi Iõputunnistus (Secondary School Leaving Certificate), and the Riigieksamid (State Examinations).

The Gümnaasiumi Iõputunnistus is taken in five subjects, graded as follows,

90 - 100%	5	väga hea	very good
70 - 89%	4	hea	good
50 - 69%	3	rahuldav	satisfactory
25 - 49%	2	puuldulik	unsatisfactory
0 - 24%	1	nõrk	poor

The Riigieksamid (State Examinations) are taken in three subjects, each graded out of 100 points.

Applicants must obtain at least the following grades in the Riigieksamid:

Mathematics: 85%
Overall assessment based on at least three subjects: 80%

Applicants offering the Option Internationale Baccalaureate (OIB) must obtain at least the following grades.

Mathematics: 12/20 points.
Overall assessment: 14/20 points.

Gambian qualifications

Applicants from Gambia usually offer A levels of UK examining boards, set as overseas examinations.

German qualifications

In the Zeugnis der Allgemeine Hochschulreife (Abitur), each subject is studied either as a Leistungskurs (intensive course) at 5 periods per week, or as a Grundkurs (basic course) at 3 periods per week.

An Abitur candidate chooses two subjects to study as Leistungkurse, the remaining subjects being taken as Grundkurse.

The two Leistungkurse are examined in writing; in addition, the candidate chooses two of the Grundkurse in which to be examined, one in writing and one orally.

Results for each subject in the Abitur are expressed as points (15 high to 0 low), as follows.

The overall assessment of the Abitur is an average grade, expressed as a fraction to one decimal place (1.0 high to 6.0 low).

You must obtain at least the following results.

Mathematics as a LEISTUNGKURS: 12 points.
Overall assessment: grade 1.7.

Ghanaian qualifications

The Greek Apolytirion Eniaiou Lykeiou has grades running from 1 (minimum) to 20 (maximum).

You must obtain the Apolytirion Eniaiou Lykeiou, and also an A-level in Mathematics, as follows.

Mathematics exactly as in our requirements for A levels, and
18 points in the Apolytirion Enaiou Lykeiou, in the official national end-of-year examinations.

In the Hungarian Erettségi vizsga (school-leaving examinations), each subject is taken either at emelt szintü (HIGHER level) or at középszintü (STANDARD level), and the results are graded as follows.

Indian qualifications

We have been given the following information. In most state schools, Hindi or the regional language is used at the primary level. The medium of instruction at secondary level remains the same, although English is taught as a second language. The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations affiliates English Medium schools only. The title of the final qualification varies widely depending upon the examining body, but it is generally called the Secondary School Certificate, Matriculation Certificate, All-India Secondary School Certificate, Indian Certificate of Secondary Education, and so on.

At present, higher secondary schooling continues for two years following completion of Standard X. Public examinations are held at the end of Standard XII, either by individual states or by Central Boards; these lead to the Higher Secondary Certificate - otherwise called the All-India Senior School Certificate, the Higher School Certificate, the Indian School Certificate, the Intermediate Certificate, the pre-University Course, and so on.

There are three secondary boards that offer nationwide examinations. They are

the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), which offers the All-India Senior School Certificate,
the Council for the Indian Secondary Certificate Examinations (CISCE), which offers the Indian School Certificate and always has English as the medium of instruction, and
the National Open School.

We are advised that the following national and state boards are acceptable without further consideration: CBSE, CISCE, Maharashtra (Mumbai), Tamil Nadu, West Bengal. Standard XII is marked by the Central Board as a percentage, although the pass mark varies with the subject. We have been given the following table that equates the grades of most states with those of the Central Board.

We welcome applications involving qualifications from boards other than those listed in this table - but we would need to know how the grades must be compared with those in the table.

Of the three typical subject grouping for Standard XII examinations, it is the SCIENCE group (English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computing Science, Electronics) which is of interest to us in connection with your application for admission to one of our programmes in Computer Science.

You must obtain at least the following grades in Standard XII.

Overall score: 85%.
Mathematics: 80%.
English: 75%.

Iranian qualifications

Applicants taking the Iran Pre-University Certificate must obtain at least the following grades.

Average in the Mathematics modules: 85%
Overall assessment: 70%

For the Matriculation Certificate to be awarded, passes are required in (1) a language, (2) a science subject, (3) a humanities subject, and (4) Systems of Knowledge.

Slovenian qualifications

In the Slovenian Matura (or Maturitetno Spricevalo), there are three compulsory subjects (obvezni predmet): Slovenian, Mathematics and English; and three elective subjects (izbirni predmet) of which, for example, Physics could be one.

Each subject can be taken either as a BASIC or as a BASIC+EXTENDED course (število). We believe that these correspond to British AS-level and A-level respectively, but we are at present uncertain how these levels relate to the compulsory or elective nature of the subjects concerned.

Each subject taken is given a BASIC assessment (ocena). For example, 'Really Good' (prav dobro) and 'Excellent' (odlično). In terms of point (točk) scores, 'Really good' is worth 4 points and 'Excellent' is worth 5 points.

Then, for each EXTENDED course, there can be up to 3 additional (dodatnih) points.

All these point scores are summed to give the overall achievement (splošni uspeh).

Applicants offering the Slovenian Matura (or Maturitetno Spricevalo) must obtain at least the following grades.

Mathematics at EXTENDED level: 7 points.

Applicants offering three Advanced Placement (AP) subjects must obtain the following grades.

Mathematics (Calculus): grade 5.
A second subject in Group A: grade 5.
A third subject in Group A: grade 4.
